'Teenage Innocence in Dress and Drugs'
Prom Magazine Inc., in collaboration with PromDressShop.com conducted a nationwide survey from over 5,000 US high school students planning on attending prom this year. The results left most prom dress designers dumbfounded. Sixty-seven percent of the high school student's surveyed said they were looking for a sweet/innocent type of prom dress, 13% were still undecided and only 20% were going with a sexy tight fitting gown. High school students such as, Dylaina from New York, New York believed, "Prom is about going out and having fun, of course every girl wants to be looked at and they want guys to like what they see, but I think that you can be hot and sexy without your dress screaming SEX."
The problem is, most prom dress designers opted for the low cut, tight fitting prom dresses this season. High slits and dresses that 'screamed sex' filled the pages of most teenage prom magazines. These slinky dresses don't give the 67% of high school teens who want pretty, angelic, innocent gowns many options to choose from.
For the minority of dress designers who did choose to take a different route and design the innocent fairy-tail princess look, sales are climbing. "We've tripled our dress sales so far this year," claims DeBora Rachelle, designer of DeBora Rachelle designs. DeBora feels that since 9/11, teenagers do not feel the need to have to prove themselves and rebel like they did in the past. "Everything is more family orientated and you see more teens wanting to please their parents", states DeBora, "and pleasing parents results in promers wearing more innocent types of gowns." Although the majority of DeBora's gowns would fit the Cinderella mold, DeBora also has a few body hugging gowns in her line, 'because you'll always get a few girls who still want to prove a point and go against society norms," she said.
Sharon Hammond, mother of Angela, a high schooler from Frederick, MD expressed that she loved her daughter's dress choice of a more covering ball gown. "Angela is pretty conservative and usually makes good choices about what to wear", stated Sharon. Sharon feels that she is a big influence on her daughter's dress choices and when her daughter finds a gown she normally asks for her mother's opinion on it before she makes the big purchase. Most survey responses were similar to teenager Brittney from East Bank, West Virginia's reply when she said, "I want to wear something that will make my mom smile."
So what do promers plan on doing after prom? Eighty-two percent plan on attending a party, 12% had not yet decided and only 6% stated they were going straight home. Of those attending parties, 56% planned on going to a party held at a friends home, 25% were going to a hotel party, 10% were unsure, and 9% were attending an after school party at their school.
Which leads us to the next question, 'If kids are dressing more innocent, are they acting more innocent?' A surprising 50% said that there would be no alcohol involved at the party they attend and 82% stated no drugs would be involved. This left only 38% saying there would be alcohol at the party of which 12% were still unsure if there would be alcohol served or not. The innocent students are the majority with only 10% of the students saying their parties would include drugs. All parties held at a school will be chaperoned and there will not be any drugs or alcohol on the premises. Another surprising statistic is that only about half of the parties will be chaperoned and of those not held at a school, 31% of the chaperoned parties would involve alcohol. When asked if the after prom party she will be holding for her friends will be chaperoned, Amanda from Catlettsburg, Kentucky stated, "my parents will be here but they really just mind their own business and let us do our own thing."
Judging from the results obtained in Prom Magazine and PromDressShop.com's survey, it seems perhaps high school students really are more innocent than most people suspect. The majority of students will certainly be dressing more appropriate and most are planning on attending a party where there will be no alcohol or drugs. One can only assume that of those not-so innocent teenagers involved in after prom parties containing alcohol, it may be the parents fault for letting the student attend a party where alcohol could be involved. Furthermore, parents cannot trust that a chaperoned party will be legal and should call first to find out if the chaperone will be allowing alcohol. However mother's like Sharon Hammond claim that if you drill it into your son or daughters head about drinking and driving, they'll know not to do it when they find themselves in that type of sticky situation.
